HSK 2 Study Guide

HSK 2 doubles your vocabulary to 300 words and starts asking you to follow real exchanges — prices, plans, directions, opinions. Pinyin is still printed on the paper, so it rewards learners who trained their ears. Here is the full map.

What the exam covers

HSK 2 tests simple but real communication — the level at which daily routines, shopping, and small talk stop being scripts. Two sections, about 55 minutes:

  • Listening — 35 questions: picture matching, short dialogues, and longer two-turn exchanges, each played twice.
  • Reading — 25 questions: sentence–picture matching, fill-in-the-blank from a word bank, and true/false comprehension.

Pinyin still appears with the characters. The step up from HSK 1 is less about harder words than about speed: more questions, longer sentences, and answers that depend on catching the second half of the exchange.

The vocabulary, by theme

The 300-word list keeps HSK 1’s core and adds the language of getting things done:

  • Shopping & money — 多少钱 duōshao qián (how much?) · 便宜 piányi (cheap) · 贵 guì (expensive) · 卖 mài (to sell)
  • Time & plans — 小时 xiǎoshí (hour) · 时间 shíjiān (time) · 开始 kāishǐ (to start) · 已经 yǐjīng (already)
  • Getting around — 公共汽车 gōnggòng qìchē (bus) · 火车站 huǒchēzhàn (train station) · 离 lí (distance from) · 到 dào (to arrive)
  • Feelings & opinions — 高兴 gāoxìng (happy) · 累 lèi (tired) · 觉得 juéde (to feel/think) · 希望 xīwàng (to hope)
  • Weather & health — 天气 tiānqì (weather) · 下雨 xià yǔ (to rain) · 生病 shēngbìng (to fall ill) · 休息 xiūxi (to rest)
  • Comparing & describing — 比 bǐ (than) · 最 zuì (most) · 长 cháng (long) · 新 xīn (new)

The grammar to own at this level: 了 le for completed actions, 比 bǐ comparisons, 因为…所以… (because…therefore…), and question words used in statements.

How long it takes

From our course tables: around 120–170 study hours from zero, or roughly 60–80 hours on top of a solid HSK 1. In our method this is the milestone level — about 120 class hours is where students pass HSK 2 and move toward HSK 3.

Study tips from our teachers

  1. Drill number listening hard. Prices, times, and dates decide a large share of HSK 2 points, and they fly past quickly.
  2. Learn grammar as sentence frames. 我比他高 “I am taller than him” is one reusable frame, not one sentence.
  3. Start weaning off pinyin. It is still printed at HSK 2 — but HSK 3 removes it. Read each theme’s words with the pinyin covered first.
  4. Time your mock papers. The 55 minutes are comfortable only if you have felt them once before exam day.

The next step

Ready for the real thing?

This guide takes you a long way alone — a course takes you the rest of the way with a teacher, a plan, and a class that waits for no excuses.
