Learn Chinese in Beijing

Our home since 2006: a courtyard campus in Gaobeidian, Beijing's cultural village — classrooms and accommodation under one roof, a 700-year-old canal village outside the door, and the whole capital a few subway stops away.

The Gaobeidian story

A 700-year village on the Grand Canal

Gaobeidian began seven centuries ago as a canal town near the head of the Beijing–Hangzhou Grand Canal (京杭大运河), the trading artery of China's last five dynasties. Barges loaded grain and silk here; the village grew up around the wharves.

The canal trade is long gone, but the village kept its shape. Ming- and Qing-dynasty buildings in blue brick and grey tile line quiet alleys, and the old houses along the Tonghui River still reflect in the water — a scene that has earned Gaobeidian the title of 'the most beautiful countryside in Beijing'.

When Beijing renewed the village as a cultural corridor, we built our campus in the middle of it. Learning Chinese in a glass tower downtown feels much like learning it in New York or London; learning it here means the culture you study in the morning is on the street at lunchtime.

Our home

Classrooms and accommodation under one roof

The campus keeps the village's rules on the outside — traditional Ming/Qing architecture, courtyard proportions, timber and tile — and breaks them on the inside, with modern, well-equipped classrooms and comfortable student accommodation in the same building.

That one-building design is deliberate. Camps, immersion stays, and intensive courses work best when breakfast, class, calligraphy practice, and evening review all happen within fifty metres of each other — students settle in fast and spend their energy on Chinese, not commuting.

Between lessons, the courtyard is the campus common room: tea breaks, character drills on the whiteboard outside, and in summer, the camp cohorts comparing notes from their excursions.

Out the front door

A mini-universe of Chinese culture

Our founder calls the village 'a mini-universe of Chineseness', and the businesses around the campus prove her point: museums, calligraphy schools, traditional furniture workshops, teahouses of every kind, Chinese medicine teaching centres, cosy hotels, and local food for every budget.

For our students this neighbourhood is the second classroom. Afternoon culture lessons walk to the calligrapher's studio instead of simulating one; tea-tasting vocabulary gets used on actual tea; and the shopkeepers have heard beginner Mandarin for years and answer it kindly.

And when you want the big-city version of China, it's close: Gaobeidian sits on the eastern extension of Chang'an Avenue, about eight kilometres from Tiananmen Square — inside the city, but not swallowed by it.
