HSK 3 Study Guide

HSK 3 is where the training wheels come off: 600 words, characters without pinyin, and — for the first time — a writing section. It is also the level that starts opening doors: many programs and employers read "HSK 3" as "actually functional in Chinese."

What the exam covers

HSK 3 tests everyday communication across life, study, and work — and, quietly, whether you can read. Three sections, about 90 minutes:

  • Listening — 40 questions: dialogues and short passages, played twice.
  • Reading — 30 questions: sentence matching, cloze from a word bank, and short-passage comprehension — with no pinyin anywhere.
  • Writing — 10 questions: rearranging words into correct sentences, and writing a character into a gap.

The exam is still multiple-choice-friendly, but the pinyin removal changes what preparation means: from HSK 3 onward, character reading is the skill that decides your score.

The vocabulary, by theme

The 600-word list adds the language of a fuller life:

  • Work & study — 会议 huìyì (meeting) · 办公室 bàngōngshì (office) · 复习 fùxí (to review) · 成绩 chéngjì (grades/results)
  • City life — 地铁 dìtiě (metro) · 地图 dìtú (map) · 附近 fùjìn (nearby) · 街道 jiēdào (street)
  • Describing events — 突然 tūrán (suddenly) · 终于 zhōngyú (finally) · 一直 yìzhí (all along) · 差不多 chàbuduō (almost)
  • People & relationships — 关系 guānxi (relationship) · 邻居 línjū (neighbour) · 客人 kèrén (guest) · 校长 xiàozhǎng (headmaster)
  • Culture & leisure — 节日 jiérì (festival) · 礼物 lǐwù (gift) · 音乐 yīnyuè (music) · 锻炼 duànliàn (to exercise)
  • Structure words — 把 bǎ (object-fronting marker) · 被 bèi (passive marker) · 虽然…但是… suīrán…dànshì… (although…still…)

Grammar to own: the 把 bǎ construction, the passive 被 bèi, resultative complements (听懂 “listen-understand”), and duration/frequency phrasing.

How long it takes

From our course tables: around 140–200 study hours from zero, or roughly 60–90 hours beyond HSK 2 — plus deliberate character work. In our classes HSK 3 preparation is where the in-house character workbooks earn their keep.

Study tips from our teachers

  1. Make characters the daily habit. Ten minutes of character review every day beats a weekend binge — recognition speed is the whole reading section.
  2. Write the 10 writing answers by hand in practice. Typing recognises characters for you; the exam will not.
  3. Learn 把 and 被 with your hands. Physically moving an object while saying 把这本书放在桌子上 fixes the word order faster than any rule.
  4. Read past-paper passages aloud. It trains reading speed and listening comprehension in one motion — the same sentences appear in both sections’ style.
